So I had a bad experience with another product in my hair so I did a co-wash with Lustrasilk Tea Tree Cholestrol

Afterwards, I conditioned my locs with Miss Jessie's Super Sweetback Treatment

I absolutely LOVE the smell and it left my locs feeling softer than they've been in a long time!!! A+

Then for my retwist and pipe cleaner curls, I used the Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme

Can you say SOFT TOUCHABLE CURLS!!!!!!! I love how the Baby Buttercreme makes my locs feel. I will be using this product from now on :) A++

I will definitely be recommending the Miss Jessie's line to my friends and hair clients.

Organic Root Stimulator Lock & Twist Gel

You know how it's said that not every hair product is for everyone, well...it's true.
I tried Organic Root Stimulator Lock & Twist Gel for my pipe cleaner curls

I must give it credit though, my curls were beautiful and tight. They bounced back when I pulled on them. But my scalp was very upset with me. My scalp started flaking and itching like crazy.

So I guess this is one product I will not be using for my self. I'm not saying don't use this product, I'm just stating that it's not a product for me.

Curls and Crochet hats

This is why I LOVE PIPE CLEANERS!!!! My curls last until I decide to wash them out. At night I pull my locs up into a ponytail and when I wake up, I take it down and shake my locs back and forth (LOL) and it still looks like fresh curls.

Chocolashea Hair and Body Products

I have received and used some of her products. Here is my review:

Black Soap and the Vanilla Bean soap bars....O...M....G.....! The best soap I have used in YEARS!!!
I love the smell and all though the black soap dries my skin out a bit, it's awesome on my hair! The vanilla bean soap which contains olive oil is definite for me! I love love love it!!!!

This Aloe-Vera Multipurpose Spritzer is awesome!!! Whenever my scalp feels dry or my locs start looking like they need somemoisture...SPRITZ SPRITZ SPRITZ, massage and keep it moving! It's so soothing on my scalp and my locs seem to love it! I also use it after I style my hair just to give my locs a little more shine.

Chocolate Whipped Hair Butter with Black Seed oil. If you love chocolate I definitely RECOMMEND this hair butter. I don't know how she does it but it smells JUST LIKE CHOCOLATE!!! I applied this hair butter on my locs before curling them with my pipe cleaners. I still haven't removed my pipe cleaners but my locs feel wonderful to the touch and look shiny! (making me love my hair color even more because it doesn't look dull anymore).

Peppermint Patty Hair Candy wow! It smells exactly like a peppermint patty! Now I'll be honest, I'm not a peppermint patty fan but I will be using this on my clients that do :) It's whipped butter just like the chocolate whipped hair butter so I know my clients will love it :)

November Curls

Ok so yesterday 11/14/11 I decided to deep condition my locs which was much needed...I shampooed my hair with the natural black soap that I received from Chocolashea (which I love love love her products I must say!!! product review on Chocolashea coming soon....) and I concocted a deep conditioner which consist of, HPO Spa Treatment Hair Conditioner, and the HPO Butter Drops. I drenched my locs and covered them with a plastic shower cap and put a scarf on over it (now don't laugh at me) I wrapped a towel on top of the scarf and put a plastic bag (yes a plastic store bag) over all of that...talk about retaining the heat! LOL
Being that I had a braid client, I did all of this early in the day (about1030am), she came over about 2pm and didn't leave till about 6pm. I didn't wash the conditioner out of my hair until about 8pm so the conditioner was in my hair for pretty much the whole day. Once I rinsed it out, I pulled out my trusty pipe cleaners to start rolling...
To moisturize my locs, I used Chocolashea's Chocolate Whipped Hair Butter (which smells just like chocolate YUMMMMMM) and I added some more Butter Drops (I just love that stuff) and proceeded to spiral curl mylocs.
The pictures below is how I have my locs now and once I pull these pipe cleaners out, I will post pics of my final results :)

I started interlocking my locs on Monday of this week and wasn't able to finish until Wednesday!!! It doesn't usually take me that long to do my own hair but I had a client come on Monday all the way from NY for me to do his locks (he was in desperate need of my services LOL) So I stopped doing my hair to do his and by the time I was done, I didn't even want to touch my own...I was sooooo tired!!! But between Tuesday and Wednesday I was able to FINALLY finish my locs YAAAAAAY ME!!! Here are before and after photos of my progress...

HPO SPA TREATMENTS Product Review

I must say ladies and gentlemen..I am truly impressed!!! Being that the majority of the products I received can be used for hair AND body...that was a big plus in my book. So here we go......

The Hair and Body Shampoo is AWESOME! Smells like oranges (had me craving some in the shower) cleansed my locs and it didn't dry out my skin. A+

The Spa Hair Conditioner was a little watery to me (I guess I was used to those thick conditioners that you have to scoop out of the jars so I really wasn't expecting it to be pourable) but ladies let me tell you....it softened my locs and again smelled like oranges LOL I love oranges by the way!!!

Twisty Locs has become my favorite to use to retwist my locs and for braids. I used it on my stepmom's hair and she LOVED IT! (so I guess I have to order her some too LOL) Seriously, applying it, you would think that it's greasy but it soaked into my locs and (I did my hair on Friday and today is Wednesday and they're STILL moisturized! With any other product, my locs would be dry by now SMH) I absolutely love it and will be using this product to twist my hair from now on!

HAPPY SCALP! HAPPY SCALP! Is my new best friend!!!!!!!!!!!
I used this on my stepmom (who needs to grow her hair out due to a bad perm made her hair fall out), on my brother (whose hair is extremely dry and brittle) and my brother's girlfriend (who has dry scalp) and it worked WONDERS!!!!! I haven't used it on myself as of yet but when I feel that my scalp is yearning for moisture which doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon...I will be applying the HAPPY SCALP to my scalp :)

BUTTER DROPS The bottle reads Just Like "Butter" and they are so right!!!! Before washing my hair because I was running late to get to work, I put some in my locs just so that they wouldn't look so dry and when I tell you that it looked like I did my locs...I'm not lying! I love Butter Drops! I will using it from now on!

From Juicy Red Locs to Multi colored Locs

I had an experience with my hair color that changed completely. Before going to NYC to visit my family in 2010, my locs were a beautiful juicy red color.
But then me and the family went to the swimming pool at Rye Playland and the chlorine stripped away all of my red.

It was so much fun to be in the water teaching my kids how to swim and stay afloat LOL we had a blast! But then I went to the showers and saw that ALL of my red washed out
I had to lighten my locs with powdered bleach before getting it to the red that I was looking to achieve. So when the red was stripped from mylocs, it turned to a reddish honey blonde color that I've grown to absolutely LOVE! Being that it was a semi-permanent hair dye, it didn't damage my locs but it did cause a few of my longer locs to break off (they were pretty thin due to the shells I use to wear on a few of my ends which caused those locs to thin out). I don't want to continue to stress my locs out adding additional color on top of what I had done so...this is what I'm left with:

I love my locs more than ever now and I decided to let the color grow out so I can have the 2 toned look (black/dark brown at the roots and the color towards the ends).
I just wanted to share with my sisters...if you're deciding on adding color to your natural tresses, please be careful getting in the pool LOL *LESSON LEARNED!!!*

Loc Treatment Feb. 2011

It's been a while since I put a deep conditioner in my locs...the time has come :)

I shampooed my locs with VO5 Kiwi Clarifying Shampoo and then did a quick ACV rinse (1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup of water then rinsed out with just water).

Before starting the shampooing process I mixed my mother's favorite (wella) deep conditioner:
Cholesterol, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Mayo, 1 egg, cinnamon oil (this concoction has kept my hair strong and healthy since I was little, I don't know if it'll work for everyone...I'm just posting what works for my texture which is thick, dry and curly)
I started at my scalp and worked my way down to the tips. Then I put a plastic shower cap over my locs and tied a scarf on top of it. I tend to leave my conditioners on for quite some time, usually on the days that I clean the house, I put a deep conditioner in my hair and let it work while I'm working around the house. Since I'm not using a hairdryer or blow dryer for heat, the heat from the plastic and physical activity gives it just as much heat. If you're trying this at home, you can leave it in your hair for anywhere between 30mins - 6hrs or so depending on your time schedule.
Rinse thoroughly and style as usual :)

I watched a Youtube video that illustrated how to use pipe cleaners (fuzzy sticks) bought at Walmart $1.97 for a pack of 100 in the craft section and some mousse...let the mousse dry completely and taadaa!!! Beautiful spiral curls :)

The History of Dreadlocks by Andrew Power

The roots of dreadlocks can be trailed to the Rastafarians of Jamaica, and further, to Indian sages and yogis, but they have never been more popular or widespread than they are today. It is said that dreadlocks originated with these eastern holy men. Possessing nothing, renouncing the world and possessions (not even a comb) they eschewed even personal grooming, hence the inevitable dreadlocks. Dreadlocks get their name from Jamaican tradition. Those with 'natty' locks in their hair were to be dreaded, or feared. When slavery was abolished in the US, it was no longer legal to enslave African Americans. But good ol' America found a loop hole, no one said anything about not enslaving native peoples of India.

So, over they went and began capturing and enslaving people from India and the surrounding areas. (Find that in a history text book!) Hindu yogis and holy men, along with their dreadlocks, escaped to the Caribbean Islands, and began appearing in places like Jamaica, where their knotty hairstyle and religious piety were noted and followed by the burgeoning Rastafarians and holy men of the islands. Dreadlocks have their roots (again, no pun intended) in spiritual circles. The Hindu holy men of the east, Rastafarians, which are essentially Judeo-Christians of the Caribbean Islands wore dreads as part of their religious lifestyle. Dreads themselves for the eastern yogis were nothing special, but the Rastas almost deified their locks, considering the hair to be holy and powerful. Dreadlocks became a religious priority. Fast forward a couple decades, and things have changed, but dreadlocks remain prevalent. You have people like Mike Borden, drummer for killer awesome rawk band Faith No More, with phat knotty dreads all the way down to his drum stool. Bands like Korn, Bad Brains, Incubus (Brandon used to have locks), Finger Eleven, POD and many more do, or used to, sport dreadlocks, which come in very handy while rocking out. Nowadays, it is about as standard to have a dreadlocked member of the band as it is to have a DJ in the group.

Of course, nearly everyone is aware that dreadlocks were brought into the pop culture spotlight by a Mista Bob Marley. There hasn't been a human like him ever before, and there will likely not be 'til the close of time. Bob Marley radiated love, peace, passion, and wisdom. He also have the best dreadlocks ever! Bob dedicated his life to praising God in music, and spreading the message of reform and spiritual growth in the world. Unfortunately, his songs have become frat-boy drinking anthems for many. And his dreads became a fashion choice. But when I heard his music, when I started to really listen - and grow dreadlocks, by the way - I started to hear something deeper, something so much more important. God.

Bob Marley sang almost endlessly about Jah. I began reading the Bible, and was amazed how much of Bob's lyrics are taken right out of Scripture. "The stone that the builder refused shall be the head cornerstone." "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" And so many more. If there is one thing I long to do in my life, it is to be part of something that makes the world a better place. Filled with the knowledge and love of God, encouraging others with the truth. Jah, short for Jehovah, is the Hebrew name for God. In the Old Testament, you will see the term LORD in all caps. This is where God's name appears in the text. Hebrew is written without vowels, and the name written in Scripture is YHVH. God's name means "I AM", meaning "Was, Is, and Ever will Be". God's name was considered so sacred and holy that ancient Israel would not even speak it, but when reading Scripture aloud they would say Lord where YHVH appeared. When the Bible began being translated into Greek and Latin, and eventually English, they decided to use LORD in the places where God's name appears, though the name Jehovah does appear in the Old Testament about 3 times, I think. Jah means the Eternal God. Many of God's people had dreadlocks through the ages. (Bear in mind ALL people are God's people. Israel was a people set aside, to be the carriers of God's word, and a commonwealth that were to emulate God's ways to the world. Ooops!)

Anyway, God's name indicates His character. Eternal, everlasting. The book of Malachi says "For I am the LORD, I do not change" 3:6. Jah wants a relationship with each individual person. Every living soul is a son and daughter of God, and Jah wants to assure each person that He is trustworthy, that He is kind and loving, that He is more than worthy to be our God and Lord. That is why Jesus was nailed to the cross - He took our place in death, when WE were the ones that should have been put to death for our own screw-ups. Sin wasn't a part of the original plan for this world. Humans were given a choice, and they chose a path of destruction rather than life. The consequences were automatically supposed to be death because evil cannot exist in the presence of God. But His Son stepped in, and because God loves us so much - His creations, His children - He allowed Jesus to pay the price for our bad choices. All we have to do is say 'Thank you, I acnowledge and accept this gift from Jah!" and our slate is wiped clean.

Jesus' original Hebrew name was Yeshua, which translates directly as "Jah Saves" or "Jah is Salvation". And the word salvation comes down through Latin roots, meaning unbroken, undamaged. Jesus died on the cross to show God's character, that God is giving, pure in self-sacrificing love. Jah wants to prove His trustworthiness. Yes, God could open the sky and pronounce "I am God, serve me", but what would people's motivation be for serving Him? Fear? Requirement? Jah is a God of freedom, and He doesn't change. He wants to prove His character, and He did on the cross, and He wants people to enter into a relationship, a saving, or salvation relationship with Him based on the truth of His character.

So how do dreadlocks fit in to that? Well, it is recorded in history that many people of Nazareth would grow dreads as part of a vow, or covenant of purity they would enter into with God. Jesus was from Nazareth. I wonder if He had dreads? Would you take Him more seriously is He did?

Bob Marley said "give thanks and praise to the Lord and we will feel alright." And this is truth. Bob Marley grew his dreadlocks as part of his Rastafarian belief. These days, few people grow dreadlocks to show their allegiance to the Lion of Zion, or because they wish to be in accordance with Old Testament decrees about not cutting your hair. Dreadlocks are now fashion, and like everything else in this material world, they are almost devoid of spiritual value. Ah, but the irony is that God is still God. The Eternal is still the Eternal. As this world comes to a close (rapidly), fashions will pass away, but God shall stand. "The stone that the builder refused shall be the head cornerstone." God is the head cornerstone, and all spiritual people, and all faiths through history that truly developed a relationship with God, that came to know God, from the aesthetic holy men of the east to modern day Christians (like me, Praise the LORD) to the kid riding a downtown subway with knotty dreadlocks on his head and Bob Marely in his discmon Ö I mean, discman, feeling the beat and praising the Eternal Creator shall draw close to God, and God shall draw close to them, and they shall gain His wisdom, which surpasses the things of this world.

Do dreadlocks make you a more holy person? No. Israel of old had direct contact with God, they were benefited with the Word of God since time began, yet look at their state today. They nailed Jesus to a cross for teaching that God His Father was kind, forgiving, ever merciful, and not something to be appeased by ritual and forms of worship. Jesus was rejected because He taught that God was to be a friend, a loving parent and comforting redeemer. Israel clung to their rituals, and expected their adherence to them to be sufficient to show their holiness, just as the aesthetics gave up any forms of pleasure and social norm in order to suffer to the point of enlightenment. They too would have nailed Christ to the cross for teaching that God has given us every good and blessed gift to enjoy. From nature, the ocean and the trees, fruits and vegetables, relationships with one another. And love. God is love, and God instilled love in each and every one of us. Love is the cornerstone of life. Love is the only rule by which a living being needs to adhere to develop a relationship with God. Will God love you more if you have dreadlocks? Will God consider a person more holy because they grow dreads, and speak in a Rastafarian accent?

Face it, the truth is there is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less. God is love, and God cares for the heart, the soul. You cannot make God not love you, it is only you yourself that turns from, or to, God. God is ever reaching out to the hearts and souls of His children, speaking to us from the beauty of nature, from His Holy Word, which teaches that God is Eternal and always will be the embodiment of love and kindness. Where do you stand on this? Do you believe in God? If yes, do you know Him? Do you share with Him your heart, do you really draw close in assurance of His boundless love, and in desire to really know God? If not, why not? I want to challenge you.

Dreadlocks or no dreadlocks, the soul of the living being is what counts, everything else is decoration.

A person who uses techniques which result in tension on hair strands such as twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking or braiding of the hair by hand or mechanical appliances, which work does not include the application of dyes, reactive chemicals or other preparations to alter the color or straighten, curl or alter the structure of the hair. The techniques include providing or offering to the general public for compensation any of the following services solely for development or improvement of physical qualities of the natural hair structure: intertwining in a systematic motion to create patterns in a three-dimensional form; inversion or outversion flat against the scalp along the part of a straight or curved row; or extension with natural or synthetic fibers.

Licensing Requirements

Be at least sixteen years of age and satisfy education and examination requirements.

Education Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a course of instruction of not less than 300 hours in the practice and theory of natural hair styling at a school of cosmetology.

I love being an Afro-Latina

Me @ 4 yrs old

Growing up in a Dominican household was not easy, especially being a first generation Dominican American (Afro Latina). At the tender age of 6, my mother decided to start relaxing my hair to reduce all of the screaming and hollering that went on while she tried to comb it.

I believe this was after my first relaxer

So I ended up going from screaming because she was yanking my hair from the roots to crying every single time I saw a perm box knowing that my scalp was about to be ON FIRE! (scabs included).

My mother's favorite saying was..."El que quiere mono bueno aguanta halones" which means if you want good hair you have to stand the pain. Her definition of "good hair" would be long, flowing RELAXED hair and if your perm didn't take i.e. bone straight, then they would blow dry it straight to make sure you had no curl pattern whatsoever in your hair. I've been traumatized and was brainwashed to believe that if you don't have long pretty hair, you were considered ugly.

I grew up on an all Puerto Rican block in the Bronx (NY) and all of the kids (including my own cousins) would tease me and tell me that I was too dark skinned and that my mother left me in the oven too long. The girls on my block even had a female Menudo group (famous hispanic boy band from the 80's who I was in love with) and they had the nerve to tell me, you can't be a part of the group because you're too dark. My nickname became Crispy on my block (my cousins still call me that to this day). Imagine the hurt I experienced between the ages of 6-18...doesn't hurt as much as it used to but I still have a sore spot in my heart about it.

In Junior High School I.S. 167 a friend of mine by the name of Renee introduced me to braids with extensions. I was finally able to let my hair rest from the relaxers from time to time...until I got to High School Jane Addams Vocational (which taught Business, Cosmetology and Nursing). I told my mother that I wanted to take the cosmetology course but she refused and told me I HAD to take the Business classes because I wouldn't make any money doing hair.....ARE YOU SERIOUS????

I was so intrigued by the cosmetology department that I spent most of my free time there and was letting some of my friends practice applying relaxers and my favorite high school style...finger waves and curls.

As I went off to college, I decided to cut my hair really short...I mean...really short

I asked a friend to shave the back for me but he didn't have any guards so I was bald in the back and Halle Berry short in the front.

I loved how my hair looked short but I was still using relaxers to help it "lay down" when my natural curls grew back. It wasn't until after I had my two beautiful children that I decided to go natural and loc my hair.

But then my mother would tell me that my hair looked like Mojones (sh*t balls) and that I needed to cut them out. I loved my hair but unfortunately I was also suffering from massive migraines to the point where I couldn't close my eyes. As my mother cut the last loc out of my hair...my headaches were gone (TRUE STORY).

So 6 years went by before I decided to leave the creamy crack alone for good this time and I decided to start my own locs. I made them much smaller and more uniformed this time around so that my short cut would be "accepted" in Corporate America.

My hair is thanking me for not applying that creamy crack (relaxers) to my hair anymore and it started to grow longer and healthier than I've seen it in years...but yet again...my mom would say to me...Porque no te cortas el pelo y te lo deriza para que se te vea bonito (why don't you cut your hair and get a relaxer so that you're hair would look pretty)...so I told mom...Sorry mom, not this time! I LOVE MY LOCS and they're here to stay!! :) My aunties and cousins (male and female) tried to convince me to relax my hair because it looks more natural...SMH natural TO WHO??? NOT ME!!!

I'm proud of my hair and all of the styles that I have been able to achieve with my locs with a lot more to come. I've been documenting my journey with photos and treatment recipes that I've come across...even used a deep conditioner that my mom taught me when I was younger (cholesterol, mayo, egg and spiritu de canela [essence of cinnamon] with a plastic cap and a scarf over it to help contain the heat so I didn't have to sit under a hot dryer).

I would love to convince my mom to go natural but I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future...she's still attached to her relaxers and attachable ponytails (I wish I had the picture of my mom back in the 70's rocking an afro...it looked so beautiful on her).

So as I continue to document my wonderful loc journey via blogs and pics I welcome any comments or suggestions as well as your stories about dealing with family and your natural hair. Us Afro-Latinas need to stick together and give each other encouragement when you feel you have no where or anyone to turn to.

The Curly pony was cute and I wanted to see how my locs would look if I took the pony down...beautiful flowing curls...so in fact I was able to get a 2 for 1 hair style out of the curly pony :)

Basket Weave Curly Pony

To achieve this look:

Separate your ponytail first with a hair tie

Basket weave the back going upwards(use 1 or 2 pins to secure the basket weave in place)

Once your basket weave is done....collect the rest of your hair and add it to the ponytail.

I sprayed the locs with Amazon Natural Essentials Flaxy Curl Leave in Moisturizing conditioner w/flax seed oil.

Add curlers to your pony (whichever curlers you decided to use..I used flexi rods and the small blue sponge rollers)

Tie down overnight and taa daaa!!!!

I started braiding hair seriously 17yrs ago in college trying to make some extra money, but I've been braiding hair since I was 6 yrs old living in Allentown, PA...braiding my neighbor/friend's hair. Now I do natural hair designs for the LOVE of it :) So far, I've done hair in the following states and I still have clientèle in these states: NYC, COLORADO, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, ILLINOIS and more to come...my goal is to have clients in every state I travel to.

What people fail to understand is that braiding and locking are an art form that is not taught at a cosmetology school. We pick it up from playing with Barbie dolls/Cabbage Patch dolls and family members.
For the life of me I can not understand why a person would rather pay a stylist more money just because they're in an establishment for the same services you get at a home location. It shouldn't matter where you get your hair done, as long as you're satisfied with the service and it's done professionally. (I am referring to natural styles. Nothing that has to do with any chemicals being applied to the hair follicle).

Another thing....what is it with the infamous "hook-up"?? Everyone is always looking for a hook-up but when they go to an establishment, they pay full price! Why is that? I understand that times are hard but don't you think times are hard for all of us and we're just trying to make ends meet like you are...so why would you try to con us out of the full price we ask for to get a deal?

To all my kitchenticians I applaud you!!! We put up with way more in the home than at a shop and we're overworked and under appreciated. So this is my way of saying...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

***DISCLAIMER*** IF YOU DON'T HAVE PATIENCE...DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!! :)

I decided to dye my hair once again and this time, instead of twisting my new growth I decided to interlock my new growth. I tell you, if you don't have the patience to sit there and deal with your hair as if you're adding micro braids to your hair, ask someone to help or go to a loctician.

This is what my locs looked like before I dyed it.

AND AFTER HOURS OF LABOR....THIS IS WHAT MY HAIR LOOKS LIKE INTERLOCKED :)

I can honestly say that it took longer than just retwisting my roots after washing, but it was definitely worth it because now I don't have to touch up my hair for about 6 to 8 weeks unless I choose to.

Interlocking has become my favorite way to deal with my new growth. Yes it takes more time but the results are worth it :)

May 3, 2010 Hair Treatment

I shampooed my hair with Neutralizing shampoo 2 times, then shampooed with Jamaican Mango and Lime Tingle Shampoo.
Here is a picture of the shampoos used in this treatment:

I rinsed my hair with an ACV rinse; 1/2 cup of ACV 2 cups of water (poured through my locs twice)
Apple Cider Vinegar:

I then applied a mix of oils as a hot oil treatment: rosemary, coconut, eucalyptus, and pure olive oil. Heated for 15 seconds in the microwave then applied to my locs for about an hour under a conditioning cap.

Once I rinsed out the oil treatment, I then shampooed with BioInfusion Olive Oil Conitioning Shampoo. (see shampoo pic above)

I applied Jamaican Mango and Lime Cactus Oil Serum to my scalp. Then I twisted my new growth with Jamaican Mango and Lime Resistant formula Locking Gel and not the locking wax because I decided to curl my locs with foam rollers.

March style: Double strand twists

I've been wanting to do double strand/2 strand twists in my hair for a while now, I finally did it :)
This was my regimen this time:
Shampooed with Black soap (yes the bar soap and it got rid of all of the buildup in my locs)
Conditioned with EVO (extra virgin olive oil)
Re twisted with Shea butter and olive oil (my hair loves olive oil)

Then of course me being the creative mind that I am when it comes to styles...I decided to basket weave the front:

I finally had the opportunity to watch the movie "Good Hair". I'm glad I watched it (liked it so much I watched it twice and took notes!!)
Good hair....what is considered to be good hair? Well, let's break it down shall we:

Good - morally excellent; virtuous; righteous satisfactory in quality, quantity or degree.

Hair - any of the numerous fine, usually cylindrical keratinous filaments growing from the skin of humans and animals.

So good hair would be considered any of the numerous fine, usually cylindrical keratinous filaments growing from the skin that is virtuous and righteous satisfactory in quality and quantity.....really??

Why is it so hard for woman of color to wear and be PROUD of their hair?

Unfortunately woman of color have been brainwashed practically since birth to think that "the lighter, the brighter, the better (Nia Long) and as a little 3 yr old girl said you're "supposed" to get a perm swinging her recently relaxed ponytails.
Personally, I think 3 yrs old is way too young to apply a relaxer in a child's hair. If you can take the time to apply that CREAMY CRACK to your child's hair, you can apply the same time to learn how to maintain her natural tresses!
As a child, my mother started me on the creamy crack at the tender age of 6. She couldn't handle all of my hollering and screaming while she tried to do my hair...the neighbors always thought she was beating me. It was a very painful experience I must admit, but now that I'm grown and embraced my natural beauty...I will never turn back to the creamy crack!
This reminds me of....School Daze the song Good and Bad hair...

I'm glad that Chris Rock actually went to the Dudley factory in Greensboro, NC to find out what exactly is in a relaxer... does anyone know what Sodium Hydroxide is? It's the main chemical in "relaxers" that breaks down the protein in the hair. ALSO...if you inhale the fumes for too long it can cause major damage to your lungs and if it gets in your eyes, it will eventually cause blindness...(bet you didn't know that huh?) I actually saw sodium hydroxide disintegrate a soda can in less than 4 hours! Why would you want to put that on your scalp??? Just so that you can be acceptable in today's so called society?
What women (and some men) fail to realize is that natural hair is freedom (Tracie Thoms) and you should embrace the hair that you were given by your ancestors.

400 years The history of African hair in America

Let's review the history of weaves shall we...
Women have been wearing wigs and weaves to cover up their natural hair...when the pack of hair says 100% human hair, do you really know where this hair is coming from? Rock traveled to India to find out where its coming from and how it ends up in America on the heads of Doctors, Lawyers and as he stated strippers swinging on polls.
There is a religious ceremony called Tonsure where men, women and children sacrifice their hair in exchange for the God's blessing. What bothered me about this was watching a baby (she was no older than 2 yrs old) getting her hair shaved off...for it to end up on the other side of town in a sweat shop to be separated, washed, bundled or sewn into tracks to be sold to the highest bidders in AMERICA. The people that sacrificed their hair have no idea where there hair goes and they don't care to know...It happens to be the biggest export in India. Hair is worth more than Gold.

Once it gets to the states, women pay anywhere between $1,000 to $5,000 for some "100% human hair". Instead of paying someone to care for their natural hair, they would rather pay to have someone else's hair on their head. As Ice-T stated...If a woman ain't happy with herself, she gonna bring nothing but pain to every fucking body around her!

EVO treatment

Today I shampooed my hair with Bio Infusion Conditioning shampoo, then took my ACV rinse and ran it through my hair a few times (with 2 bowls over the sink letting it saturate my hair and switching bowls in the process). Afterwards I took my extra virgin olive oil and mixed it with a little Jamaican Mango and Lime Island Oil and again saturated my hair. Placed a plastic cap over my hair and a scarf on top of that to retain heat...let's see what the results are...stay tuned for results and pics :)

I rinsed out the olive oil and re-twisted with a concoction I made (shea butter, CD's Loc Butter, olive oil) and this is what my hair looks like afterwards:

Since my hair tends to be dry (it absorbs water like no one's business LOL) I think I found one of the oils for my natural hair care collection...Olive Oil :)

treating several skin disorders. It is an effective moisturizer and helps in anti-aging, cleansing, and softening the
skin. Aloes inhibits the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase which is responsible for skin discoloration. Aloes
removes dead skin cells and stimulates formation of new cells, tightening of the skin, and making the skin look
young. Other medicinal uses include treating radiation ulcers, peptic ulcers, thermal burns, wounds, pimples,
freckles, spots, dandruff, split ends, menstrual problems, constipation, urine disorders, and improving digestion.

Amba Haldi (Curcuma Aromatica)
Amba haldi is an aromatic stimulant, tonic and carminative. It protects skin from atmospheric pollution, wrinkles
and bacteria. It imparts resistance against allergies of throat, nose and trachiobranchital passage. Haldi is
commonly used in skincare preparations and treats pimples, acne and black heads. It helps prevent and slow the
growth of unwanted superfluous hair. Both Haldi (Turmeric) and Kali Haldi (Black Zeodary) are used by the
traditional healers in treatment of hydrocele (A pathological accumulation of serous fluid in a bodily cavity,
especially in the scrotal pouch). Both are used externally.

Amla (Phyllanthus Emblica)
Amla is one of the richest sources of natural Vitamin C. It is a refrigerant, diuretic, carminative and stomachic.
Amla is a wonderful cleansing agent for both the skin and hair. It imparts lustre to hair and protects scalp
aagainst infection, dandruff, and helps prevent and control greying of hair. For skin, it improves complexion and
removes wrinkles. Amla is also used to treat constipation and is used as a cooling agent to reduce the effects of
sun strokes and sun burns.

Anantmool (Hemidesmus Indicus)
Anantmool has long enjoyed reputation as tonic, alterative, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic, blood purifier &
flavouring agent. The main constituents are P-Methoxy salicylic aldehyde, beta sitosterol, tetracyclic triterpene
alcohals, fattyacids, tannins, saponins etc. It is employed in nutritional disorders, chronic rheumatism, gravel
(calculi) & other urinary diseases, syphilis, scrofula (cervical tubercular lymphadenitis) & skin affections. It
helps in treatment of syphilis by stimulating the defense machanism of the body. It has also been used
successfully in the treatment of psoariasls. It shows inhibitory effect on the growth of Escherichia coli.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum )
Anise is carminative and pectoral in character. It enjoys considerable reputation as a medicine in coughs and
pectoral affections. In hard, dry coughs where expectoration is difficult, it is of much value. It is greatly used
in the form of lozenges and the seeds have also been used for smoking, to promote expectoration. The volatile
oil, mixed with spirits of wine forms the liqueur Anisette, which has a beneficial action on the bronchial tubes,
and for bronchitis and spasmodic asthma, Anisette, if administered in hot water, is an immediate palliative.

Arjun (Terminalia Arjuna)
Arjun is an antringent, cardiac stimulant and tonic. It is known for its useful effects on treating cardiac
disorders. It also treats fractures, pimples, ace, freckles and non-healing wounds. Taken internally, it is
extremely good for heart.

Ashwagandha (Withania Somniferra)
Ashwagandha is also referred to as "Indian Ginseng," and it is one of the oldest medicinal plants in use.
Ashwagandha has more medicinal uses than most herbs. It is a very prominant ingredient is treating several skin
problems. Externally, it is also used for treating ringworm, snake bites, sores, wounds, boils, swellings, sore
eyes, and lice. The root of the plant is used as a powerful tonic, sexual stimulant, and narcotic. It is also used in
restoring functions of organs, treating urine disorders, treating senile disorders, rheumatic disorders,
indigestion, cough, cold, chest complaints, and ulcers. Internally, the leaves are used in killing worms, treating
hemorrhoids, and reduction of fever.

Aruna (Sphaeranthus Hirtus)
Aruna is bitter stomachi, stimulant, alterrative and demulcent. It is used for Bilious affections and for the
dispersion of various kinds of Tumours, and is useful as blood purifier in skin diseases. It is used in Glandular
swellings in the neck and also a good remedy in Jaundice.

Babool (Acasia Arabica)
Babool is an astringent and a demulcent. It is used to heal open wounds, ulcers, haemorrhage, swelling, bleeding
gums, dry cough, throat pain, canker sores, syphilitic affections, and aphthous stomatitis. Decoction made of
babool bark could be used as garble and mouthwash.

Bakul (Mimosops Elengi)
Bakul is used in the treatment and maintenance of oral hygiene. Rinsing mouth with water solution made with
bakul helps in strengthening the teeth. Bakul also prevents bad breath and helps keep the gums healthy.

Basil (Ocymum minumum )
Basil is aromatic and carminative. Although it is generally employed in cooking as a flavouring, Basil has been
occasionally used for mild nervous disorders and for the alleviation of wandering rheumatic pains- the dried
leaves, in the form of snuff, are said to be a cure for nervous headaches. An infusion of the green herb in
boiling water is good for all obstructions of the internal organs, arrests vomiting and allays nausea. The seeds
have been reckoned efficacious against the poison of serpents, both taken internally and laid upon the wound.
They are also said to cure warts.

Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia)
Bergamot oil is a powerful antiseptic and is excellent for sores. It increases photosensitivity of skin and is
widely used in suntan preparations. It is also used to treat acne, psoriasis, ulcers and wounds. Traditionally used
as a potent medicine and sold for its scent.
Bergamot oil produces an uplifting, refreshingly astringent atmosphere. This may assist in reducing anxiety and
depression. As an ingredient in lotions and massage oils it can help reduce tension and inflammation. Well-diluted
in a facial or body oil bergapten-free Bergamot's anti-septic and anti-fungal properties can be helpful for acne,
and problem skin conditions. A few drops in a sitz bath or regular bath can also be beneficial. It is very popular
as a perfume ingredient both in commercial and home recipes.

Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum )
Black pepper is aromatic, stimulant, carminative and is said to possess febrifuge properties. Its action as a
stimulant is specially evident on the mucous membrane of the rectum, and so is good for constipation, also on the
urinary organs. As a gargle it is valued for relaxed uvula and paralysis of the tongue. On account of its stimulant
action it aids digestion and is specially useful in atonic dyspepsia and torbid condition of the stomach. It will
correct flatulence and nausea. It has also been used in vertigo, paralytic and arthritic disorders. It has also
been advised in diarrhoea, cholera, scarlatina, and in solution for a wash for tinea capititis.

Brahmi (Centela Asiatica)
Brahmi is a tonic, diuretic and an energy stimulant. It is used to treat skin diseases like eczema and dermatitis. It
is also used for improving memory, epilepsy, and several mental disorders. Brahmi is also very useful for hair
growth, and is commonly used as a hairwash.

Bawachi (Psoralea Corylifolia)
Bawachi is used in treating psoriasis, leprosy, leucoderma and several other skin diseases like white skin patches,
spots, blemishes, acne etc. Bawachi is capable of stimulating the cells by penetrating through the epidermis to the
lymphatic cells and entering into the subcapillary areas under the skin. It is alos a powerful herb for treating
lice, dandruff and scalp itching.

Cade (Juniperus Communis )
Cade Oil is generally used in the treatment of the cutaneous diseases. It is a ready solvent for chemical drugs
and is used externally for chronic eczema as oil, ointment, and soap.

Calamus (Acorus Calamus )
Calamus is an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic. On account of the volatile oil which is present, it also acts as a
carminative, removing the discomfort caused by flatulence and checking the growth of the bacteria which give
rise to it. It is used to increase the appetite and benefit digestion. It has a brownish-yellow colour and a
pungent, spicy taste and is used as a stomachic and flavouring agent.

Camphor (Cinnamonum camphora)
Camphor has a strong, penetrating, fragrant odour, a bitter, pungent taste, and is slightly cold to the touch like
menthol leaves; locally it is an irritant, numbs the peripheral sensory nerves, and is slightly antiseptic. Camphor is
used in medicine internally for its calming influence in hysteria, nervousness and neuralgia, and for serious
diarrhoea, and externally as a counter-irritant in rheumatisms, sprains bronchitis, and in inflammatory
conditions, and sometimes in conjunction with menthol and phenol for heart failure.

Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis )
Chamomile is a Tonic, achic, anodyne and an antispasmodic. The official preparations are a decoction, an
infusion, the extract and the oil. It is an old-fashioned but extremely efficacious remedy for hysterical and
nervous affections in women and is used also as an emmenagogue. It has a wonderfully soothing, sedative and
absolutely harmless effect. It is considered a preventive and the sole certain remedy for nightmare. It will cut
short an attack of delirium tremens in the early stage. It has sometimes been employed in treating intermittent
fevers.

Cedar (Thuja Occidentalis )
Cedar is aromatic, astringent and diuretic. The decoction of cedar is used in intermittent fevers, rheumatism,
dropsy, coughs, scurvy, and as an emmenagogue. The leaves, made into an ointment with fat, are a helpful local
application in rheumatism. An injection of the tincture into venereal warts is said to cause them to disappear. It is
alos a very good pain-reliver.

Chandan -- Sandalwood (Santalum Album)
Sandalwood is one of the most expensive, most exotic, and most aromatic plants known to humans. Grown mostly
in the southern parts of India, Sandalwood is a very highly revered plant both in the medicinal world and in
Hindu culture. Its seductive fragrance is considered to have many curative properties. Sandalwood has a use in
treating most skin problems. It is a cooling agent, stimulant, and blood purifier. It protects skin from the sun's
rays, acts an anti-aging agent, and keeps skin smooth and aromatic. Sandalwood is extremely effective on
pimples, prickly heat, skin erruptions, itching, rashes, spots, freckles, and swellings. It is a very popular

products, baths and diffuser blends, but its astringent, anti-inflammatory and mildy anti-bacterial properties
make it effective and beneficial for a range of skin conditions and complexions.

Ginger (Zingiber Officinale )

Henna (Lawsonia Alba )

Jyesthamadha (Liquorice Glycerriza)
Jyesthamadhu has been in use since the time of Roman empire. Hippocrates recommneded this root as an
expectorant and carminative. It is used for cough, asthma, hoarseness (voice improvement), strength development,
hyperacidity, soar eyes etc. For skin it is partcularly used as a facial, and as a dressing for wounds to expedite
healing.

Jyotishmati (Celastrus Paniculata)
Jyotishmati oil is stomachic, tonic and good for cough and asthama. It is used in leprosy, gout, rheumatism,
headaches and leucoderma. Its use in the treatment of beri-beri is also reported. It is used in combination with
other herbs as sexual stimulant.

Kachur Sugandhi (Kaempferia Galanga)
Kachur Sugandhi is diuretic, carminative, stimulant and expectorant. It contains alkaloid starch with fragrant
liquid essential oil. It is generally used in perfumery but it most important use is in the hair care. It stimulates
hair growth, prevents loss of hair, treats dandruff, lice and many other scalp disorders. It is popularly used as a
hair wash. It is also known for treating cough.

Khair (Acasia Catechu)
Khair is a powerful astringent, cooling agent and a blood purifier. It contains tannins and is useful in pyorrhea.
Other medicinal uses of Khair include the treatment of repetitive stomatitis, mouth ulcers, spongy gums, bleeding,
swelling, dental plaque, abscess and hoarseness of voice.

Khus (Andropogan Muricatus)
Widely used in aroma therapy and perfumes, Khus is a cooling agent, tonic, and blood purifier. It has a very
cooling effect on the skin, and is used in treating many skin disorders. Khus is know to have a calming effect on
the nervous system, and therefore is also used in psychological treatments for anger control, insomnia, and stress
relief. Other medicinal uses of Khus include ringworm, indigestion, loss of appetite, fever, gastric irritation,
menstrual problems, vomiting, diarrhea, sprains, back pain, rheumatism, and shooting pains in nerves.

Lavender (Lavandula Vera)
Lavender oil helps to relax, calm nervous system, and is a good sedative. Lavender was used in earlier days as a
condiment and for flavouring dishes to prevent indigestion and stomach disorders. It has aromatic, carminative
and nervine properties. Though largely used in perfumery, it is now not much employed internally, except as a
flavouring agent, occurring occasionally in pharmacy to cover disagreeable odours in ointments and other
compounds. Red Lavender lozenges are employed both as a mild stimulant and for their pleasant taste. The
essential oil, or a spirit of Lavender made from it, proves admirably restorative and tonic against faintness,
palpitations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness, spasms and colic. It is agreeable to the taste and smell, provokes
appetite, raises the spirits and dispels flatulence. A few drops of the essence of Lavender in a hot footbath has
a marked influence in relieving fatigue. Outwardly applied, it relieves toothache, neuralgia, sprains, rheumatism,
healing burns, wounds, cracks, and skin inflammation. Also used in treating acne, psoriasis, sunburns, hairloss
and migrane.

Lemon Oil (Citrus Limonum)

all antiscorbutics, being almost a specific in scurvy. The juice may be used in diaphoretic and diuretic draughts.
It is highly recommended in acute rheumatism, and is sometimes given to counteract narcotic poisons, especially

haemorrhage after delivery, or as a lotion in sunburn. It is said to be the best cure for severe, obstinate

Lemongrass owes its sweet scent almost entirely to its chief constituent, citral, and is one of the chief sources of
the citral used in the manufacture of Tonone or artificial violet perfume. It is used for improving both skin and
muscle tone, and tightening skin. It is also used in treating acne and pimples.

Lodhra (Symplocos Recemosus)
Lodhara is made from bark and is a cooling agent and a mild astringent. It is useful in treating eye inflammations
and bowel complaints. It is widely used in oral hygiene and treats bleeding gums, bleeding teeth, and strengthens
gums and teeth. It also treats skin rashes, amoebiasis and menstrual disorders.

Maka (Eclipta Alba)
Maka is a coolant, tonic and stimulant. It has been in use for centuries for hair treatment and helps prevent
falling hair, stops premature greying and is known as a brain tonic. It is also known for treating insomnia.
Manjishta (Rubia Cordyfolia)
Grown mostly in the northwest Himalayas, the root of the Manjishta plant is widely used in treating pimples,
reducing wrinkles, improving complexion, treating burns, healing injuries, and lessing inflammation, swellings,
spots, and scales. The fruit is used to treat liver problems, and the stem is used for snake bites. Internally, this

Marigold flower, rubbed on the affected part, is an admirable remedy for the pain and swelling caused by the
sting of a wasp or bee. A lotion made from the flowers is most useful for sprains and wounds, and a water
distilled from them is good for inflamed and sore eyes. An infusion of the freshly-gathered flowers is employed
in fevers, as it gently promotes perspiration and throws out any eruption - a decoction of the flowers is much in
use in country districts to bring out smallpox and measles, in the same manner as Saffron. Marigold flowers are
in demand for children's ailments. The leaves when chewed at first communicate a viscid sweetness, followed by
a strong penetrating taste, of a saline nature. The expressed juice, which contains the greater part of this
pungent matter, has been given in cases of costiveness and proved very efficacious. Snuffed up the nose it
excites sneezing and a discharge of mucous from the head. The leaves, eaten as a salad, have been considered
useful in the scrofula of children, and the acrid qualities of the plant have caused it to be recommended as an
extirpator of warts.

people who have had access to this tree have used its pod-like fruit to clean their hair. They collect, dry and

"shikakai" which literally translates as "fruit for the hair" .
Today this fruit is grown commercially in large quantities in India and the Far East. As a result, shikakai powder
is readily available and continues to be commonly used as a preferred shampoo. The dried, powdered fruit is
sold in attractive packages that show women with long, beautiful, shiny hair. Many popular brands are sold
throughout India.
Typically, shikakai is mixed with water to make a paste which is worked through the hair. It lathers moderately
and cleans hair beautifully. It has a natural low pH, is extremely mild, and doesn't strip hair of natural oils.

A skin conditioning agent that is emollient, non-greasy and ideal for dry, tired and mature skins.
Argane Oil : Argania spinosa
Rich in natural sterols, this oil from Morocco is used by the local women to keep their skin soft, smooth and protected.

Artemisia Oil : Artemisia sphaerocephala
This oil comes from a family that includes Mugwort, Chinese Wormwood, Davana and Absinthe. The Artemisia family shares the common feature of being beneficial to the skin, especially to keep it clear of infection and improve wound healing.

Avocado Butter : Persea gratissima
Reported to contain a complex blend of vitamins A and E and other active materials which increases skin elasticity and encourages healthy skin.

Avocado Oil : Persea gratissima
A light, fast penetrating oil that was reported to be absorbed faster by the skin than corn, soybean, almond and olive oils.

Babassu Oil : Orbignya oleifera
Originating from the Brazilian rainforest, this oil is reported to be non-comedogenic. It leaves the skin with a soft, lustrous smoothness.

Baobab Oil : Adansonia digitata
An African tree steeped in mystery, legend and religious significance. The fruit provides an exquisite oilthat is a rich and substantive moisturiser.

Beeswax : Beeswax
Beeswax makes for a harder bar of soap and is also used in creams, lotions, lip balms and candle making. Beeswax contains a high percentage of unsaponifiables and is often used in formulations containing honey to harden what would otherwise be a too soft soap. Limit the use of beeswax in cold process soapmaking to about an ounce per pound of oils.

Blackcurrant Seed Oil : Ribes nigrum
A rich source of GLA and a superb moisturiser which can be used in place of evening primrose or borage seed oils.

Borage (Starflower) Oil : Borago officinalis
Another rich plant source of GLA. Excellent moisturiser in skin care.

Brazil Nut Oil : Bertholletia excelsa
An oil rich in proteins and vitamins E and A, this precious gift from the South American rainforest comes from the fruit (nut) of a tree that can grow for a thousand years. Brazil nuts, or para nuts, produce an oilthat is a rich emollient and a moisturiser not too dissimilar to sesame oil.

Calendula Oil: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet almond) Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract This oil is made by infusing Calendula Petals in a good carrier oil like Olive or Sweet Almond. It is a light yellow colored oil. It is historically known for healing wounds, dry and damaged skin and for Eczema and soothing skin eruptions. Is very mild and a great addition for baby soaps, lotions and creams. Good for all skin types. Note that Calendula may be infused in different oils in which case the "Sweet Almond" will be replaced with the oil used.

Candelilla Wax : Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax
It takes approximately 25% less candelilla than beeswax to achieve effective use in products like lotion bars and lip balms. Therefore, it can also be considered an economical "vegetable" alternative to beeswax. Candelilla was has excellent glide with the color of natural beeswax, a light golden yellow.

Camellia Oil : Camellia sinensis
A traditional oil used in the Far East and particularly in Japan for the protection and moisturisation of the skin and hair.

Canola Oil : Canola Oil

Canola is usual the oils that is used in place of Olive Oil in soap formulas. Like Olive Oil based soaps it take a bit of time to trace. It does not give the same good values to the soap as Olive Oil does, but is not as expensive.
Use can be up to 50% of the oils in a soap formula.

Carrot Oil : Daucus carota sativa
A source of beta-carotene and provitamin A. Natural colour and skin nutrient. Often used in suncare products.

Cashew Nut Oil : Anacardium occidentale
An oil rich in proteins, this lubricious material can be used wherever a skin nourishing effect is needed.

Castor Oil : Ricinus communis
A very glossy oil on the skin. Used in lipsticks, lip balms and lip salves. Also used in transparent soaps and hair grooming products.

Chaulmoogra Oil : Taraktogenos kurzii
An oil native to Burma and China, it is an Indian remedy for problem skins, particularly for dry,
desquamative skin conditions and sores.

Cherry Pit Oil : Prunus avium
An oil with an interesting profile of fatty acids. It moisturises and protects the skin to leave it soft and smooth.

Chia Oil : Salvia hispanica
A rich luxuriant oil with a wonderful ancient Aztec storyline. It contains an abundance of linolenic acid which helps to explain its substantive feel on the skin.

Cocoa Butter : Theobroma cacao
A traditional African remedy for dry skin, suitable for the most delicate of skin types.

Coconut Oil : Cocos nucifera
A traditional and trusted moisturising and protective oil from the tropics. One of the most respected oils found in the British Pharmacopoeia.

Coffee Oil : Coffea arabica
An unusual and exciting proposition for an emollient. This oil has connotations of being reviving and stimulating.

Evening Primrose Oil : Oenothera biennis
A favourite source of GLA, this modern seed oil is a well known and much loved moisturiser and skin nutrient.

Flax Seed Oil : Linum Usitatissmum (Linseed) Seed Oil
Flax seed is rich in essential fatty acids which directly takes part in the regulation of skin permeability, presents worthwhile restructuring and moisturizing skin properties for cosmetics. It is high in vitamin E and stimulates cellular regeneration and it is
useful for preventing scarring and stretch marks.

Gold of Pleasure Oil : Camelina sativa
Probably introduced into this country by the Romans, this oil has an amazing lubricity which makes it ideal for those products where spreadability is required.

Grape Seed Oil : Vitis vinifera
A slightly green, low odour oil which is ideal as a carrier for essential oils in massage oils and other delicate colour/fragrance products.

Hazelnut Oil : Corylus americana
A recent paper showed that hazelnut oil has phospholipids which give greater and longer-lasting moisturising potential to cosmetic emulsions.

Hemp Oil : Cannabis sativa
A virtually canabinoid-free oil that rivals linseed for its richness and high arachidonic acid content. A perfect choice for skin protection.

Hyptis Oil : Hyptis suaveolens
A high concentration of omega-6 lipids makes hyptis oil an ideal choice in products for dry, flaky skin.

Illipe Butter : Shorea stenoptera
An exotic material from the rainforests of Borneo. This rich butter is packed with natural fatty acids, triglycerides and phytosterols to protect and moisturize the skin by complementing its natural lipid layer. A wonderful alternative to cocoa butter which, chemically, it closely resembles.

Jojoba Oil : Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
Jojoba Oil is really not an oil, but a liquid wax. This oil has been used for many years in skin care products because of the healing power that is has. It is said to be closely related to human sebum and this makes is very compatible with our skin. It is said to help is fighting Acne and Pimples and is wonderful for dry and damaged skin.

Kiwi Seed Oil : Actinidia chinensis
An oil rich in vitamin E, the kiwi, or chinese gooseberry, grown in New Zealand, is a significant source of skin nutrition and protection.

Kokum Butter Garcinia Indica Seed Butter
Kokum Butter exhibits excellent emollient properties and high oxidative stability. Like other butters, it melts at skin temperature and is ideal for lip sticks and balms.

Kpangnan: Pentadesma butyracea (African Butter Tree) Fruit

Kpangnan is a natural fatty extract from the kernels of the African butter tree from West Africa. Kpangnan, also known as "golden shea butter," is produced using traditional methods and has not been refined. It is a raw, natural product in its purest form. Kpangnan can be used like shea butter as a fatting agent in cosmetic products, topical ointments, creams and lotions. It has smooth texture as is applicable to facial, hand, and body care products. In general, Kpangnan can be used in most oil based products or in the oil phase of cosmetic and toiletry formations. Here are some suggested uses for Kpangnan: Lip Balms, Lipsticks, Hand and Body Lotions and Creams, Facial Moisturizers, Bath Oils, Soaps, Rubs and Ointments, and Body Butters.

Kukui Nut Oil : Aleurites moluccana
To the Hawaiians this tree is a symbol and a legend. The oil is a panacea for delicate, sensitive or dry skin and is pure and gentle enough to use on a baby's delicate skin.

Macadamia Nut Oil : Macadamia ternifolia
An oil from the 'King of Nuts', this Hawaiian emollient is reported to have properties akin to those of sebum.

Mango Seed Oil : Mangifera indica
This oil from India is a greatly respected emollient that is often used as a cocoa butter replacement.

Manketti Nut Oil : Ricinodendron rautanenii (proposed)
The Manketti Nut or Mongogo Nut is a source of a precious edible oil from Namibia that is rich in phytosterols and natural proteins. It is a highly prized emollient that will pamper the skin to leave it
lusciously protected.

Marula Oil : clerocarya birrea(proposed)
An oil from the fruit of a tree much revered by the indigenous people of Southern Africa, who extract theoil themselves for cracked, dry or damaged skin. It is a prized cosmetic oil for both skin and hair, being similar to olive oil in composition.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil : Limnanthes alba
An oil that is stable, non-greasy and rapidly absorbed.
This oil is ideal for those products where a soft, smooth, silky feel is required whether it be on skin or hair.

The tropical paradise of Tahiti captured in one gloriously fragranced oil which overpowers the senses with its rich floral bouquet. The pure delight of gardenia flowers infused in skin-loving coconut oil.

Neem Oil : Melia azadirachta
A very aromatic oil, neem (also known as margosa or nimba) is one of India's most respected treatments for problem skin.

Ngali Nut Oil : Canarium spp. (proposed)
A precious oil is extracted from this exotic tree (which also provides a valuable resin) for use as a local remedy for dry skin.

Olive Oil : Olea europaea
An oil that is mentioned in the Bible and was known to the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians, who introduced it into Spain. This oil is legendary for its safe, gentle care and treatment of the skin.

Orchid Oil : Vanilla planifolia
A light, delicate oil that is perfect for providing a light moisturisation to those products where the after-skin feel should be a whisper.

Oyster Nut Oil : Telphairia pedata
A novel oil that offers skin conditioning and protection against the loss of precious skin hydration.

Palm Kernel Oil or Flakes : Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil
The other lathering oil. Can be used up to 50% of a soap formula. But works great at 20% to 30% of a soap formula.

Palm Oil : Hydrogenated Palm Oil
This oil is used as a hard base oil instead of Lard or Tallow for making a totally Vegie soap. It also can be drying to some skin types. Use at 50% of the oils in a formula if you like or less.

Passionflower Oil : Passiflora edulis
A light, gentle oil with connotations of being soothing and relaxing. It leaves a natural soft feel to the skin without being over-occlusive.

Peach Kernel Oil : Prunus persica
A skin conditioning agent that is emollient, non-greasy and ideal for dry, tired and mature skins. Can be used as an equivalent to apricot kernel oil.

Peanut Oil : Arachis hypogaea
A traditional oil for use in sunscreen preparations and after-sun oils. It is substantive and protective to the harshest of external conditions.

Perilla Oil : Perilla ocymoides
Known by the Chinese name of Zi Su or in English as the beefsteak plant or Perilla, this material shows antiseptic activity and has been shown to be effective against Propionibacterium acnes (responsible for acne).

Pine Nut Oil : Pinus pinea
A mediterranean delicacy, the edible seeds are known as 'pignons' or 'pinocchi' and they yield a novel moisturising oil.

Pistachio Nut Oil : Pistacia vera
An oil that is substantive and protective to the harshest of external conditions. Compares favourably with peanut oil.

Poppy Seed Oil : Papaver orientale
Containing virtually no opiates, this must be the sister to hemp oil and could be used in any products where an interesting moisturiser is required with an emotive story line in the pack copy.

Pumpkin Seed Oil : Cucurbita pepo
The oil from pumpkin seeds has been used across the world as a treatment for sores, ulcers and other skin problems. Its high sterol and vitamin E content makes it ideal for this purpose.

Rice Bran Oil : Oryza sativa
A moisturising oil, rich in gamma oryzanol.

Rose Hips Oil : Rosa canina
The rose of Mosqueta oil, which was once described as the 'Fountain of Youth'. This oil is remarkable for its benefits to damaged and distressed skin.

St. John's Wort Oil : Hypericum perforatum
An orange-red oil that takes its colour from the hypericin it contains. This oil is part of most herbalists' repertoire for damaged skin, bruises and other skin problems. Especially useful for sensitive skin products.

Safflower Oil : Carthamus tinctorius
Safflower oil is mentioned in ancient Egyptian texts and was used to heal old wounds. It has an exceptionally high linoleic acid content and is an excellent choice for the replenishment of moisture in
skin creams and lotions.

Seabuckthorn Oil : Hippophae rhamnoides
Obtained from the maceration and extraction of the fruit into olive or sunflower oil, this is an old and traditional remedy handed down by generations of battling Mongols for the treatment of bruised and
battered skin. Ideal for inclusion in "sports" ranges.

Sesame Oil : Sesamum indicum
Also known as gingilli oil, this oil has been known since earliest antiquity, from ancient Egypt to the Indian continent, as a soothing, gentle emollient. It is an extremely good substitute for olive oil and has excellent longevity in massage preparations.

Shea Butter : Butyrospermum parkii
This rich, buttery oil from central Africa is used for the protection and care of skin cracked and dehydrated by the elements. Beurre de karite is an elegant addition to products crafted for the smoothing and replenishment of dry skins.

Shikonin Seed Oil : Lithospermum erythrorhizone
Known by the Chinese name Zi Cao or in English as Gromwell, this material shows clinical anti-inflammatory activity and is used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of burns, sores, eczema and scalds. It has also been shown to increase the growth of epithelial cells.

Shortening : Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
Vegetable shortening is made of hydrogenated soybean oil and is an inexpensive way to add hardness to soap, is mild and has a stable lather. Added with other vegetable oils, it makes a hard bar of soap, but can be brittle when cut into bars.

Sisymbrium Irio Oil : Sisymbrium irio
This seed oil was much loved by the Romans and is still used today by the beautiful women of Asia for improvement of the complexion. It can be used with great benefit in skin care preparations.

Soybean Oil : Glycine soja
This plant has been known and used by the Chinese for more than 4,000 years, though today most of theoil comes from the USA. This oil is a cost-effective base on which to prepare hair and body products where good honest moisturisation is required at a budget
price.

Sunflower Oil : Helianthus annuus
A simple yet cost-effective emollient oil, well tried and tested for generations in a wide variety of emulsions formulated for face and body products.

Sweet Almond Oil : Prunus amygdalus dulcis
Much loved for generations, listed in the British Pharmacopoeia and an excellent choice for even the most simple of moisturisers or massage oils. Almond oil should be in every formulator's palette.

Walnut Oil : Juglans regia
Probably a native of Persia, this nut provides an emollient oil which has been used for its efficacy on dry and damaged skin. In mythology, while man ate acorns the Gods ate walnuts.

Watermelon Seed Oil : Citrullus vulgaris
Known since the time of the ancient Egyptians, this seed oil has been used for the care of the skin, to maintain its beauty and aid in its repair.

Wheatgerm Oil : Triticum vulgare
Contains one of the highest levels of natural vitamin E and is a valuable additive to any skin care product where care and protection of the skin is important.

Wild Borage Oil : Trichodesma zeylanicum
This oil is not totally unrelated to our borage (Borago officinalis) since it is from the same family. It originates from Tanzania, where it is used for its emollient and soothing properties. It may also be found in Pakistan, where it is used for similar purposes.

Ok so this was my regimen today:
I shampooed my hair with Bio Infusion Olive Oil Conditioning Shampoo
I mixed 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar (I added some aromatic herbs my mom sent me) and let it sit in my hair for about 10 mins.
I conditioned my hair with Garnier Fructis Fortifying Cream Conditioner (Length & Strength)

I love the crinkle look that braiding my locs gives me. Now braiding my hair for the crinkle look takes time. Not necessarily the braid process itself, it's the waiting for the crinkles to set. For soft crinkles that'll fall within a week, all I do is cornrow my hair in about 8-10 cornrows and leave it in for about a day or two. This time I actually took about 6 locs and made plaits throughout my entire head. I didn't want to take them down so I created a style with the plaits.

Now the braids in the back I coiled them up and put a rubber band on each braid to hold it in place overnight...If I would've kept the coils in, the curls would be tighter...I took this picture after my curls dropped a bit.

Treatment Recipe

This is a recipe that I am currently using on my hair. I don't know how well it'll work for other people but for me it leaves my hair feeling stronger and softer.

Miracle Whip
1 Egg
Honey
Aloe gel
Conditioner
Leave-in conditioner

Heat it up in the microwave about 20 seconds then saturate the hair with the mix. Cover hair with plastic bag or cap then tie a head scarf over and leave in hair for 1 hr to overnight.

Shampoo out then condition hair (if desired but after that treatment...you won't have to), twist new growth and style.

Braid Out Updo

This is a style you can use if you have your hair braids for the braid out/crinkled look.

The front is in a basket weave then take a handful of hair at either side and tie a knot. Then tuck it and pin it down. Take 6 or so braids in the back and braid them into plaits and rubber band the ends. Once the back is fully braided, another basket weave (from the bottom up). Once at the top, just tuck down the ends.

Ok so I was talking to a potential client who asked me have I ever heard of this loc machine that locks your hair immediately....I smirked to myself and said...a lock machine? Are you serious? But I kindly replied to him no I haven't heard of this item. So, I went and did some research and found what "machine" he was talking about. So I'll be ordering this real soon and I'll let everyone know how it works.

This new year will bring some positive changes in my life.
I start at a new shop tomorrow which means that corporate america just isn't for me anymore. I've been looking for an office job for the past year and a half and I always get the..."there just aren't any positions out here that you're qualified for". In my opinion I think that they just didn't want to pay me what I was asking for. Better for me though because I only did office work because I had the training to, not because I loved it.

Now doing hair....that's what I love to do!! I've worked at shops where I would open up at 10am and not leave until 4am to then open the shop up again at 10am...without complaints! I loved it! Would do it all over again! Once I open my Natural Hair Care Salon and Spa...I will do the same and expect my stylist to have the same love for hair that I do.

I'm going to find as many natural hair care seminars and classes this year that I can take so that I can keep my skills up to par. I'm going hard this year! Like the song says...GO HARD OR GO HOME!
As I start my new journey in this new salon, I will also start a workout regimen, 3 days a week which will included some skating as well :) "I gotta skate!!"

Today was a wonderful day and I would like to share :)

I have a braid client that has been with me since the summer of 2005

He's been telling me for a while now that he wanted to loc his hair...I told him, whenever you ready, let me know and I braided his hair for 4 years....until December 23, 2009 I asked him...so what are we doing today? Braiding it...or locking it up? He smiled and said..we're locking it up! That was my Christmas gift to me from him :) For him to let me do his hair for Christmas means more to me than an actual gift. I have a passion for doing hair. I actually love it! When a client stays with you through a transition like that, it means a lot.

And so I'm writing this blog as a thank you to Dough Barker for allowing me to loc your hair for Christmas :)

I feel so blessed and thankful for all the wonderful people that God has placed in my life. I had such a wonderful time at my sister-in-law's house. Good food, good laughs, good times.

I just love when we get together and play board games LOL It's hilarious the things you find out about the people.

December 1, 2007 was the day I made a lifelong decision to loc my hair once again. This time instead of going to shop to get them done, I decided to start my locs myself.

I've been taking pictures since I started so that I can monitor my growth as well as show off the different styles that I've worn. Hair has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl and I've been braiding hair professional since my college days trying to make some extra money(you know how college students do anything to make some money especially when they're far from home. I used to braid hair, type term papers and when I worked at McDonald's, I used to bring back to the dorms the left over sandwiches and sell them to my suitemates...I guess that's the NY hustla in me!)

The first 6 months of my loc journey were interesting to say the least. At one point my hair was just everywhere and since it was so short, there was only so much I could do with it.

I sported headbands until I had enough length to actually style it. It was rough for me because I was used to ponytails and being able to braid my hair but at this point, all I could do was wear a headband. I'm happy I passed the awkward stage :)

As my hair grew, I started getting more creative with my loc styles.

In this picture I braided my locs into about 8 cornrows after washing and re-twisting my new growth and left the cornrows in for a few days so the crinkles would set...this was the final result. I was extremely happy with the outcome.

I've seen alot of people that have locs with blonde in their hair, don't get me wrong, some people look nice with it but blonde tends to break your hair off much easier than other colors so I decided on Red. I love red especially as a hair color. When I had my hair relaxed, I used to get this color called Egyptian Clay. The most beautiful color I've seen and it looked so cute in my hair.

This was right before New Year's 2009 the very first time I let someone else style my hair for me, a loctician named Antwon (he did a beautiful job) I was very pleased with the style. Thanks Antwon! :)

As my hair gets longer, I can experiment now with more styles, this Loc hawk I also found a YouTube by vnllawytchkltblndie he actually did the simple Loc hawk by just gathering your hair in sections and securing it with rubberbands. Here I went to one of my favorite styles from when i used to wear my hair relaxed....1 french braid. I love the fact that my hair is to the point now that I can style it in so many different ways.
So as December 1st approaches...I would be celebrating 2yrs strong of the most beautiful locs that I was blessed to have created.
2010 will bring more strength, more positivity and more love. Stay tuned for more pictures of my journey.
